Literary Analysis Essay

In the “Under the Banner of New York” by Zadie Smith talks about the routines that New Yorkers have in their everyday lives. Zadie explains what she sees everyday and says that you really can’t predict what New Yorkers do daily. She further explains what she encounters throughout New York. In the text, it really shows her passion for this place. It really shows that she loves this place a lot and it means something to her. Zadie is passionate about New York because she talks about having freedom and being yourself. Also, she says that every person is different from each other which makes it diverse, every person has their own story.

The theme that Zadie Smith encounters with New Yorkers is that throughout the text, she seems very connected to New York. She describes what she sees and how many New Yorkers always have something to do. Zadie loves New York and all because people don’t pay mind to you and you feel like you have freedom to do anything, the word judge is not even in New York’s dictionary. Zadie cares for New York, unlike E.B. White who got tired of New York. She says that it is love at first sight but once you start living in New York for years then you will get tired of it and you will no longer like it (E.B. White, Here is New York)  E.B. White got so tired that she moved out with her husband. But I disagree with her, New York is not boring, there are many things to do here and everyday is something new. As Zadie says, this place is unpredictable and you don’t know what people go through. New York is something special. Overall, the theme is no matter what, you will always come back. In the text, Zadie explains her love for New York “that is exactly what I love about this place. The capacity to gather without precise definition I experience as a form of freedom…”(Zadie Smith, Under the Banner of New York). This shows her how she appreciates New York and it’s people. She therefore also says “ here’s one about the people of New York: we are not scum. We are every variety of human…”(Zadie Smith, Under the Banner of New York) She supports the people who live here and it will always have that pride.

Zadie Smith was effective in delivering her message. She once again proves her love for New York. In every part of the text, she points out things that people do such as routines. She also defends her people. Zadie will always love New York no matter what.
